Free LLM APIs for commercial use

What each provider’s own terms say about using the free tier in a product. A rate limit tells you how much you can call; the terms tell you whether you may ship.

Confirmed: commercial use allowed without conditions (0)

No official page confirms this for any provider today.

0 of 0 cells above were read on the provider’s own page in the last 30 days (oldest check: ). Each check mark opens that page. The other 0 say “not verified” instead of repeating a number from someone else’s article.

Not for production

What to check before you rely on it

Why the first list is empty

No provider’s page that we read says, in so many words, that the free tier may be used commercially without conditions. We do not turn silence into permission, so nothing is listed as confirmed. What we can show is where the terms draw a line.

NVIDIA NIM: free access ends at production

Members of the NVIDIA Developer Program get free access to NIM API endpoints for prototyping. NVIDIA defines production as any use other than development, testing, research or evaluation, and requires an NVIDIA AI Enterprise licence for it.

Gemini API: paid services for users in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK

The Gemini API terms say you may use only Paid Services when making API clients available to users in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. They also say the API is for professional or business purposes, not consumer use. An app with European users cannot sit on the free tier.

Limits are the practical barrier

Even where terms are silent, 50 requests a day on OpenRouter or $0.10 of monthly credit on Hugging Face does not carry a product. Use a free tier to choose a model, then budget for the paid one. The table shows the limits; data and training shows what happens to your users’ prompts.

Questions and answers

Can I use a free LLM API in a commercial product?

It depends on the provider’s terms, not on the rate limit. NVIDIA’s free NIM access excludes production. Google’s terms require paid services for API clients offered to users in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. For the other providers we have not confirmed a statement either way.

What counts as production use?

NVIDIA defines it as any use of NIM other than development, testing, research or evaluation, and requires an NVIDIA AI Enterprise licence for it. Other providers use their own wording; read the terms linked in the cell.

Is “not verified” the same as “allowed”?

No. It means we did not find the answer on an official page within the last 30 days. Treat it as unknown and read the provider’s terms before you ship.
