Free tier changes

Free tiers that were cut, retired or changed, each tied to the provider’s own page. When the page gives the date of the change we print it; otherwise the entry says the day we observed it.

    Reduced

Cerebras lists a time-limited trial, not a recurring free tier

The rate-limits page describes a Free Trial of $5 in credits that expire 30 days after they are granted, issued after a verified payment method is added. It lists no recurring free allowance.

    Policy

Gemini API free-tier limits are not published per model

The rate-limits page gives no requests-per-minute or per-day figure for the Free tier. It says limits depend on the usage tier and can be viewed in Google AI Studio, per project.

    Baseline

First collection of OpenRouter zero-price models

Starting point of the automatic list. Models that enter or leave the zero-price list are logged from this day on.

    GitHub Models fully retired

GitHub states that the playground, the model catalogue, the inference API and bring-your-own-key are no longer available to any customer, and points to Azure AI Foundry for model access.

Why free tiers change, and how to be ready

A free tier is a marketing budget

Providers open free access to win developers and close it when demand outgrows the budget. In 2026 GitHub retired GitHub Models entirely, Cerebras’ documentation describes a 30-day trial with a payment method, and Google’s rate-limits page gives no free-tier figure per model. A tutorial written a few months earlier still tells you otherwise.

What the log records

An entry is created when a re-read of an official page differs from what this site had recorded, and when a model enters or leaves the OpenRouter zero-price list between two daily collections. Every entry links to its source. Rumours and third-party posts are not entries.

Design for the day it ends

Keep the base URL, the model id and the key in configuration; keep a second provider tested; handle the rate-limit error instead of crashing. The OpenAI-compatible page lists providers that take the same code.

Questions and answers

How do you find out that a free tier changed?

Two ways. Provider limits are re-read by hand on the official pages, and a difference becomes an entry with the source. The OpenRouter zero-price list is compared automatically between daily collections.

Why do some entries say “observed on”?

When the provider’s page states the date of the change, we use it. When it does not, we record the day we read the page and say so. We do not guess the date from third-party posts.

Is there a feed?

Yes: an RSS feed at /changes.xml and the same data as JSON at /data/changes.json.
